COURSE FORMAT

Employee Resilience: Developing Emotional Flexibility and Well-Being at Work (for the Service Sector) - 2 Days

In today’s challenging business world with insurmountable levels of complexities and uncertainties, workplace stress is on the increase. Based on a 2019 Well-Being Survey by CIGNA, Singapore workers are amongst the most stressed at work globally (at 92% compared to global average of 84%), with the ‘always on’ corporate culture. Chronic workplace stress, when unsuccessfully managed, may result in employee burnout, an occupational phenomenon recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2019. Burned-out employees are more likely to take sick leave and are 2.6 times as likely to leave their jobs, which translate into loss of healthy, engaged, and talented employees, apart from increased organization spending such as in healthcare, rehiring and retraining.

Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, accepting what is going on inside and outside ourselves non-judgmentally, without getting caught up in thoughts or emotional reactions to the situation. An increasing body of neuroscience research shows that regular and sustained mindfulness practices can lead to physical changes in the brain that help promote resilience against stress. Other benefits of mindfulness practice at work and individually, include improved concentration, productivity, working memory, self-awareness, communication skills, relationships with self and others, sleep quality, empathy, and life satisfaction. The workplace is where most people spend a third of their daily lives maximizing their creativity and potential, hence there is value in fostering a positive work culture with happy, healthy and engaged employees.

In the service sector with high human interaction that requires significant amount of emotional resources, embracing mindfulness will enable participants to handle challenging situations at work as it helps one gain perspective, handle stress in a healthier and sustainable manner, and make better decisions that are more aligned with personal needs and values, and therefore bringing more meaning and authenticity into their work.
